Many things can exist between two points in space and time, between objects, between people; a river, a divide, a war. A love, a kiss, a lens. Between us...
The Quiet Hours 2010 -
The quiet hours
the spaces in between
The Quiet Hours is an experimental series; it changes often, evolving and developing, growing and reducing.
The Body As Organic Form 2011
These works were part of my honours project in 2011. My exegesis, entitled: The Body as Organic Form; Beauty and the Male Figure, was an exploration of two concepts.
It began as an investigation into the ontological boundaries of humanity; where we fit in the spectrum of what is 'Nature' and what is 'Man-made'. But, my affinity to work predominantly with the male figure began another discussion that I was not aware of at first.
Asking myself why I was so drawn to the male image; I determined it was because I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the male body to the surrounding landscape. The male body is typically portrayed as strong and hard; the landscape in these images is rugged and unforgiving; making the flesh appear vulnerable.
I found this contrast quite beautiful and it made me question current notions of beauty: why is it that the male figure is rarely associated with an idea of beauty, a realm that is often delegated predominantly to the female sex? This was not always the case, as Western Art history shows, and so I began to investigate the idea of 'Beauty' and the male figure.
